Your prom or homecoming dress should feel like you, and work with your school's event requirements. Before you fall in love with a style, use this practical checklist to plan your shopping and fitting.
School rules vary. This is a shopping guide, not an official North Carolina dress code or a guarantee of admission. Confirm the current requirements for your specific school and event with the school or event organizer. Do not assume last year's policy, another school's rules, or the everyday school dress code applies to the dance.
Before you shop: get the current rules
Save a copy of the event's written dress code on your phone and bring it to your fitting. Check whether guest rules differ and whether the school offers dress preapproval. If a requirement is unclear, send the organizer clear front, back and side photos of the dress and ask before purchasing or making alterations.
Your six-point dress-code checklist
- Neckline: Check any limits on neckline depth, cleavage, side coverage, sheer panels and cutouts. Ask whether illusion mesh or a lining counts as coverage. Try the dress while sitting and leaning forward, not just standing still.
- Back coverage: Confirm how low the back may go and whether open backs, lace-up details, sheer fabric or side openings are permitted. Check the actual fit on your body rather than relying only on a model photo.
- Length: Ask whether the event permits short dresses, requires a particular hem length or uses a specific measurement. Check the front, sides and back while standing, sitting and moving. Bring your planned shoes to any hemming appointment.
- Straps: Confirm whether strapless, spaghetti-strap, halter and one-shoulder styles are allowed and whether there is a minimum strap width. Do not assume clear straps or a removable wrap will satisfy the rule. Ask the organizer first.
- Slits: Check any maximum slit height and how it is measured. Walk, sit and take a step up to see how the opening moves. Ask about overlapping skirts and sheer inserts if the policy does not address them.
- Footwear: Confirm any restrictions on heels, open toes, sneakers or other shoes, including venue-specific requirements. Try walking and dancing in your shoes, and ask whether you may bring a permitted backup pair.
Match your shopping to your event
Once you know your school's requirements, explore our Jovani Prom collection & Ava Presley Prom collection for prom inspiration. Compare each dress's neckline, back, straps and slit details with your checklist before choosing a favorite.
For homecoming, browse the Ava Presley Homecoming collection and Rachel Allan Homecoming collection. Pay particular attention to your school's length and coverage requirements when comparing styles.
No collection or designer label guarantees that a dress meets your school's rules. Approval depends on the individual dress, its fit and your event's current policy.
Do one final fitting check
Try on the complete outfit with your intended shoes and undergarments. Walk, sit, raise your arms and take a few dance steps to check that coverage stays where you expect it. Recheck the dress after any alterations, and allow time for changes before the event.
