Finding your prom or homecoming dress should be exciting, not a guessing game about what you can wear. If you’re shopping for a school dance in North Carolina, use this checklist to compare your favorite dress with your school’s current requirements before you buy or arrange alterations.
School rules vary. This guide is a shopping checklist, not an official dress code or a guarantee of admission. Confirm the requirements for your specific school and event with the organizer. Prom and homecoming may have different rules, even at the same school, and guests should check the host school’s requirements too.
Start with your school’s current dress code
Find the dress-code information for this year’s dance in the event announcement, student handbook, or school communication. Save a copy on your phone and bring it when you shop. If wording is unclear, ask the event organizer before purchasing. Photos of the front, back, and sides of a dress can help you ask a specific question, but follow your school’s approval process if one is provided.
Your six-point dress-code checklist
- Neckline: Check whether the school sets limits on neckline depth or visible cleavage. Ask how plunging necklines, sheer panels, and illusion fabric are treated. Try the dress while standing, sitting, and leaning forward to check that coverage stays in place.
- Back coverage: Confirm any limits on how low the back may fall and whether open backs, lace-up backs, side cutouts, or exposed midriffs are allowed. Do not assume mesh, lace, or a cover-up meets a coverage requirement. Ask whether a jacket or wrap must stay on throughout the event.
- Length: Check the required hemline and how the school measures it. Do not assume a short homecoming dress or a floor-length prom gown is automatically approved. Check the shortest point of an uneven hem and try sitting, walking, and climbing a step.
- Straps: Ask whether strapless, spaghetti-strap, halter, or one-shoulder styles are permitted and whether a minimum strap width applies. Check that the bodice feels secure when you raise your arms and move. Clear or removable straps may not satisfy the school’s rule.
- Slits: Confirm whether slits are allowed, how high they may extend, and how that height is measured. Check the opening while walking and sitting, not just standing still. Ask about sheer inserts and overlapping fabric if the wording is unclear.
- Footwear: Confirm whether heels, sneakers, sandals, or open-toe shoes are permitted and whether shoes must stay on during the dance. Try your shoes with the dress to check the hem and your balance. If you plan to bring backup flats, make sure they also meet the rules.
Shop with your checklist in hand
For prom inspiration, explore our Jovani Prom collection & Ava Presley Prom collection and compare each favorite’s neckline, back, straps, and slit with your school’s requirements. A designer or collection name is not a dress-code approval.
Planning your homecoming look? Browse the Ava Presley Homecoming collection and Rachel Allan Homecoming collection. Keep your school’s length and coverage requirements beside you as you narrow your choices, and check the individual dress rather than assuming the whole collection meets the same rules.
Before buying or making alterations
Bring your saved dress code and the shoes and undergarments you expect to wear. Check the dress from the front, back, and sides in good lighting. Sit, walk, and raise your arms to see how the fit and coverage change. If an alteration is needed, ask a qualified alterations professional what is possible before committing, then confirm the planned change with your school if approval is required.
A final check before dance night
Try on the complete outfit again after any alterations. Recheck the neckline, back, hemline, straps, slit, and shoes against the latest event instructions. Keep any school approval handy and check for updated guidance before leaving.
